Carmel #242a | Israel–USA 1996 Hanukkah Joint Issue Souvenir Leaf – 2 First Day Stamps – Carmel #242a
WASHINGTON, DC
OCT 22 1996
FIRST DAY OF ISSUE

English Description
Official Israel Postal Authority Philatelic Service Souvenir Leaf issued in 1996 for the joint Israel–United States Hanukkah stamp issue.
The colorful design features burning Hanukkah candles, traditional dreidels and the flags of both Israel and the United States.
Two corresponding Hanukkah stamps appear together on the leaf:
United States – 32¢
Israel – 2.50 NIS
Both stamps feature the same colorful candle design created by Jewish-American graphic designer Hannah Smotrich and were issued as part of the joint philatelic issue on October 22, 1996.
First Day Cancellations
The United States stamp bears a:

cancellation.
The Israeli stamp also bears a special commemorative cancellation dated 22.10.1996, creating an attractive joint-issue presentation of the two countries' stamps.
First Israeli Self-Adhesive Stamp
An important philatelic feature of this issue is that the Israeli Hanukkah stamp was Israel's first self-adhesive postage stamp.
This milestone is specifically described in the original explanatory text printed on the reverse of the souvenir leaf.
Reverse
The reverse contains detailed Hebrew and English information about Hanukkah, the Maccabean revolt, the miracle of the oil and traditional holiday customs.
It also explains the joint Israel–United States stamp issue and the special relationship represented by the two stamps.
Souvenir leaf design credited to David Ben-Hador.
