English Description
A fascinating 1949 Israeli postal-history cover combining early Israel philately, Israel Railways history, and an attributed connection to the Rabin family.
The envelope is franked with two stamps from the famous Doar Ivri series, the first postage-stamp issue of the State of Israel: a 5 mil green stamp and a 10 mil purple stamp, giving a total franking of 15 mils.
A particularly attractive feature is the large illustrated Israel Railways event cachet/cancellation in the center of the cover, featuring a Star of David, stylized railway tracks and the Hebrew inscription:
From Today, Israel Railways at Your Service.”
This is a documented 1949 Israel Railways event cancellation. Other philatelic covers bearing the same special marking together with Doar Ivri stamps are known in the collectors' market.
The Addressee – N. Rabin
Of particular historical interest is the recipient.
The Hebrew address reads:
Mr. N. Rabin
P.O. Box 514
Tel Aviv
The recipient is attributed as Nehemiah Rabin (1886–1971), father of Yitzhak Rabin, who would later serve as IDF Chief of Staff and Prime Minister of Israel and receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
Nehemiah Rabin, born Nehemiah Rubitzov, was associated with the Jewish Legion and later participated in the public life of the Jewish community in Mandatory Palestine, including activity connected with the Histadrut and Haganah.
Important attribution note: The envelope itself is addressed simply to “N. Rabin, P.O. Box 514, Tel Aviv.” While the recipient is attributed as Nehemiah Rabin, I have not independently confirmed P.O. Box 514 through an archival directory. Buyers should therefore examine the photographs carefully as part of the item's documentation.
Philatelic & Historical Interest
This cover brings together several desirable collecting areas: Doar Ivri stamps, early Israeli postal history, Israel Railways memorabilia, early State of Israel history, Judaica, and an attributed Rabin-family connection.
The two original Doar Ivri stamps remain attached to the envelope and show postal cancellations, while the large Israel Railways event marking remains clearly visible.
The cover is preserved in original vintage condition with expected signs of age and postal use, including toning, minor staining and wear to the edges and corners.
Sold exactly as shown. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description.
