Israel 1949 TABUL National Stamp Exhibition Cover – S/S Kedmah Special Ship Post Cancel
TABUL 1949 TEL AVIV
NATIONAL STAMP EXHIBITION”
English Description
A fascinating early Israeli philatelic cover from 1949 combining two important chapters of early State of Israel postal history: the first TABUL National Stamp Exhibition and the special S/S Kedmah ship-post event of October 24, 1949.
TABUL – National Stamp Exhibition, Tel Aviv 1949
The left side features an elaborate printed cachet for:
TABUL 1949 TEL AVIV – NATIONAL STAMP EXHIBITION
illustrating Israel's famous early Doar Ivri stamps and the TABUL dove emblem.
TABUL was Israel's first National Stamp Exhibition, held in Tel Aviv in 1949. Original photographic documentation of the exhibition is preserved by the National Library of Israel.
A special TABUL souvenir sheet, designed by Otte Wallish, was also issued for the exhibition on May 1, 1949.
S/S Kedmah Special Ship Post – October 24, 1949
The most historically interesting feature is the large illustrated S/S Kedmah ship cancellation, accompanied by a circular multilingual S/S KEDMAH postmark dated:
24.10.1949
Specialized documentation of Israeli maritime postal history records that on October 24–25, 1949, the closing event of the First World Conference of the Israel Maritime League was held aboard the S/S Kedmah, attended by more than 200 international delegates.
A special ship post office and cancellation were used aboard the vessel on October 24.
This therefore represents a genuine period connection with an important event in the early history of Israeli maritime mail.
Stamp & Tab
The cover carries a 5 Pruta Israeli “Mo'adim LeSimcha” stamp with a large attached tab, tied to the cover by the S/S Kedmah cancellation.
The stamp should not be removed: the complete combination of cover + stamp + tab + special ship cancellation is what gives the item its postal-history significance.
A Combination of Two Historic 1949 Events
This example is particularly attractive because a cover originally produced for the TABUL National Stamp Exhibition was subsequently used for the S/S Kedmah special ship-post event.
It therefore combines early Israeli philately, maritime postal history, TABUL, S/S Kedmah and early State of Israel history in a single collectible.
Condition: Good vintage condition for its age, showing expected age-related toning and minor edge/corner wear. Stamp and tab remain attached and the important October 24, 1949 postal markings are clearly visible. Sold exactly as photographed.
