Handmade Vintage Dutch Queen Wilhelmina Silver Coin Cufflinks – 1911 25 Cents & 10 Cents
WILHELMINA KONINGIN DER NEDERLANDEN

English Description
An unusual pair of vintage handmade Dutch coin cufflinks, crafted from genuine silver coins dating from the reign of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands (1890–1948).
Each cufflink is constructed from two original Dutch coins connected by a curved metal fitting:
A larger 1911 25 Cents coin at the front and a smaller 10 Cents coin at the reverse.
The coins bear the portrait of Queen Wilhelmina and the inscription:
WILHELMINA KONINGIN DER NEDERLANDEN
Both larger 25 Cents coins are dated 1911 and were originally struck in .640 silver.
Vintage Handmade Craftsmanship
A particularly appealing feature of this pair is its old handcrafted character.
The curved connecting arms, the way the coins have been joined and the slightly irregular hand-finished construction suggest traditional artisan or jeweller-made work rather than modern mass production.
Minor tool marks, differences in finishing and the aged patina are part of the character of the piece and give each cufflink an individual appearance.
Historical Context – Wilhelmina Coin Jewellery and the Dutch “Silent Resistance”
Dutch jewellery made from coins bearing Queen Wilhelmina’s portrait has an important historical association with the Second World War.
During the German occupation of the Netherlands, Queen Wilhelmina lived in exile in London and became an important symbol of Dutch national identity and continuity.
In 1941, Dutch silver and copper coins were officially collected for wartime use. Jewellery did not have to be surrendered in the same way, and some coins bearing Wilhelmina’s portrait were transformed into rings, brooches, bracelets, pins and cufflinks.
The Rijksmuseum documents this type of coin jewellery as part of the Dutch “Silent Resistance,” when wearing Wilhelmina’s portrait could express loyalty to the royal family and quiet opposition to the German occupation.
The Textile Research Centre in Leiden also specifically documents wartime cufflinks made from Dutch silver coins featuring Queen Wilhelmina, placing such objects within the same tradition of symbolic resistance.
