1.2.1951 | Israel 1951 Complete Service Stamps First Day Cover – Full 4-Stamp Set – FDC
1 2 1951
TEL AVIV
DAY OF ISSUE”
English Description
Original Israeli First Day Cover dated February 1, 1951, bearing the complete four-stamp set of Israel's early “Service Stamp” issue.
These special stamps were produced for the postal use of Israeli Government offices. They were based on Israel's existing ancient-coin definitive designs and received the distinctive Hebrew overprint:
Service Stamp.”
The complete set consists of:
5 Pruta – Purple
15 Pruta – Red/Orange
30 Pruta – Blue
40 Pruta – Brown
All four denominations were officially issued on February 1, 1951, making the date of the postal cancellations particularly important. The series was designed by noted Israeli graphic designer Otte Wallish and printed by photolithography.
Genuine First Day Cancellation
The four stamps are tied to the cover by large TEL AVIV cancellations clearly dated:
1.2.1951
This corresponds exactly with the official issue date of the Service Stamp series.
At upper left is an additional hexagonal commemorative marking featuring a gazelle/deer and the bilingual inscription:
“DAY OF ISSUE”
The lower-left portion of the envelope also carries an attractive embossed POST OF ISRAEL emblem.
Historical Significance
The stamps feature motifs derived from ancient Jewish coins associated with the Jewish revolts against Roman rule, continuing an important design theme used on Israel's earliest postage stamps.
This complete First Day Cover represents an interesting piece of early State of Israel governmental and postal history, issued less than three years after independence.
A desirable collectible for specialists in Israel philately, Israeli First Day Covers, government/service stamps, Otte Wallish designs, Judaica and early Israeli postal history.
Condition: Good vintage condition with expected age-related toning, minor marks and some visible creasing/toning. All four stamps remain attached and the February 1, 1951 First Day cancellations are clearly visible. Please examine the photograph carefully for exact condition.
