THE 4th MACCABIAH IN ISRAEL”

INAUGURATION DE LA IVème MACCABIade

English Description

Original commemorative cover produced for the Fourth Maccabiah Games held in Israel in September 1953.

This attractive early Israeli collectible features a striking multicolor design incorporating the Maccabi/Star of David emblem, an athlete's track, wheat motifs and Maccabi symbolism, together with the inscriptions:

“The 4th Maccabiah in Israel”

The Fourth Maccabiah was held in September 1953 and brought hundreds of Jewish athletes from countries around the world to the young State of Israel.

Special Opening Day Cancellation – September 20, 1953

The highlight of this cover is its distinctive Fourth Maccabiah opening-day event cancellation.

Designed in the shape of an athletics track with an Israeli flag, the cancellation carries Hebrew and French inscriptions referring to the Opening of the Fourth Maccabiah, together with the date:

20.9.53 – September 20, 1953

This corresponds to the opening day of the Fourth Maccabiah Games, making the cancellation particularly relevant to collectors of Maccabiah postal history.

Stamp

The cover is franked with an Israeli 20 Pruta blue postage stamp depicting an ornate Torah Ark.

Please note that this example does not have an attached tab. It should also not be confused with the official 110 Pruta Fourth Maccabiah commemorative stamp.

Maccabi Association

The lower portion of the cover carries the emblem and Hebrew identification of the Maccabi World Union, together with its Tel Aviv P.O. Box address.

The combination of an original illustrated Maccabiah cover, event-specific opening-day cancellation and period Israeli postage makes this an attractive piece for collectors of Maccabiah memorabilia, Jewish sports history, Israel philately, Judaica and early Israeli postal history.

Condition: Very good vintage condition for its age, with light age-related toning and minor edge wear. The printed design remains attractive and the special cancellation is clearly visible. Sold exactly as photographed.
