English Description

An unusual and highly distinctive Israeli “Israel” Kinetic State Medal, issued in 1987 (5747) by the Israel Government Coins and Medals Corporation.

The medal was designed by Israeli artist Naim Basson and struck in .925 Sterling Silver, weighing 40 grams and measuring 50 mm in diameter.

Unlike a conventional static medal, this piece is a genuine kinetic work of art composed of three movable elements.

At the center is a rotating square featuring a stylized Star of David on one side and a Menorah on the other. The square rotates within an open hexagonal frame, while the hexagonal element itself moves within the outer circular ring.

By rotating the individual components, the appearance and composition of the medal can be continually changed.

Kinetic Art

Kinetic art introduced actual physical movement into artwork, transforming the viewer from a passive observer into an active participant.

In the “Israel” medal, Naim Basson combined this concept with two of the most recognizable symbols associated with Israel and Jewish heritage – the Star of David and the Menorah.

The outer ring bears the artist’s signature, Naim Basson.
