An original Israeli Hanukkah coin with a face value of one Israeli Lira, from the year 5722 (1961), known as "Hasmonean Hero."
One side: A burning torch — symbol of Hasmonean heroism — alongside the face value "Israeli Lira," the years 5722 and 1961, and the name of the state in Hebrew and Arabic.
Other side: A scene depicting the heroism of Eleazar the Hasmonean, brother of Judah Maccabee, stabbing the war elephant, within a stylized frame.
Background: The scene depicts the Battle of Beth Zechariah (162 BCE): Eleazar charged the war elephant believing it carried King Antiochus V, stabbed it from below, and was killed when the elephant collapsed on him. One of the well-known stories of the Hasmonean Revolt.
